• The first priority in any fire situation is protection, so make sure the house is structurally sound before entering. Before any assessment or work starts, it is critical to ensure that the structure is secure.
• Once inside, the next thing to remember is the products of incomplete combustion (PIC), which are generated by all fires and usually fill the structure long after the fire has been extinguished. Every fire produces hundreds, if not thousands, of PICs, all of which are dangerous, and some of which are even confirmed carcinogens. These acids can begin to etch materials that are normally considered to be relatively resistant to heat damage, such as all metals, glass, crystal, china, and so on, in just a few days or a week. Because of the possibility of corrosion, “pre-treating” metals and other at-risk materials in the house should be considered. A soft coating of oil (vegetable oil, 3-in-1, etc.) is applied to the susceptible products as a pre-treatment. This will prevent pitting on certain surfaces and will be easily removed during the final cleaning.
